Events - Neighbourhood

Recife and Olinda are easily reachable by bus or car. By bus it will take you some 2 hours, by car one hour drive to the center of Recife. From Recife there are many buses leading to Olinda. The sistertowns are only a short distance from each other which means 20 minutes by bus or car.

Cape of Santo Agostinho/ half a day

app. 2 & 1/2 miles of extension the only granite intrusion in Brazil(100 million y.o.) This, second to various historians, was the place where the spanish seafarer Vincent Yañes Pinzon discovered Brazil on 26th jan 1500, three months ahead the official discovery by the Portuguese.

 

Church of Nossa Senhora de Nazaré

Built in the 16th century on top of the highest rock formation that forms the Cape of Santo Agostinho. The bells are the original ones dating back to 1670 still calling the worshippers for the sunday mass.

 

Monastery Carmelita (ruins) 18th century

Fortress Castelo do mar (ruins)

Built 1632 to protect the harbour of Nazaré, originates from a canon battery installed there by the Italian count of Bagnuolo.
 

Engenho Massangana/ half a day

Erected at the end of the 18th century. A complex of manor house chappel and slave quarters, site where important steps where undertaken for the abolition of slavery. Birthplace of writer and abolition supporter Joaquim Nabucco (ambassador to the USA late 19th century).
